In many economically depressed places – both at home and abroad – the iPhone is nearly worth its weight in gold. Yes, stolen iPhones are big business, as they can net petty criminals a handsome sum for their technology as well as their iconic status. But to most people who ever have found themselves dealing with the reality of a lost or stolen iPhone, the real loss often has to do with the data on the device rather than its overall monetary value.

Many of these apps include complex digital locking systems, GPS tracking, full data wipes, alarms and even photo enabling that will automatically snap a photo of any perp using the iPhone with the unit’s built-in camera.

Two good options for iPhone security apps include Find My iPhone and iLostFinder.

Lock the iPhone

The best way to prevent vital iPhone data from getting into the wrong hands is to keep the unit locked. This may seem inconvenient to those who may hate the idea of entering an unlock code every time they wish to use their iPhone, but it is a tiny price to pay for overall piece of mind.

Buy traveler’s insurance

Those planning a big vacation to some far-flung foreign locale are likely in store for a great time – and risk of petty theft. As mentioned above, pickpockets and purse-snatchers love iPhones for the money they can fetch on the open market. That’s where traveler’s insurance comes in. And with the sheer amount of affordable travel-insurance options out there, there’s no reason for vacationers not to take advantage and cover their iPhone.

By adhering to these simply guidelines, iPhone owners may not completely eliminate the risk of theft or loss of their handheld, but they can ensure full data protection and likely recovery of the stolen unit.
