Top 5 Gambling Movies of All Time

Gambling movies have been popular since the 1930’s. Movies based on gambling are often dramatic and exciting, giving us the chance to live vicariously through the characters, without losing our shirts in the process. Tons of movies have been made about casinos, gambling and even mob-controlled Las Vegas; here are our favorites:

1. Casino (1995)

This movie, directed by Martin Scoreses and starring Robert De Niro, is centered around Sam Rothstein, a character based on Frank Rosenthal. Rosenthal ran casinos for the Mafia back in the 70’s, and did so with an often heavy hand. The movie also stars power-hitters Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone and James Woods, rounding out a cast of characters that alone makes the movie worth watching.

2. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Danny Ocean, portrayed by George Clooney, leads his band of eleven merry men through a plan to rob three Las Vegas casinos at the same moment in time. The movie spawned two sequels, neither of which are as exciting, or as charming, as the original. A star-studded cast makes this movie a who’s who of Hollywood elite; have fun watching as star after star walks across your screen.

3. Rounders (1998)

If you’ve got a loved one addicted to poker, chances are that you have this movie to thank; or despise. The incredibly popular film, starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton kicked off the world of poker as we know it today. Damon’s character tries to finance his way through college and ultimately lays down the cards with John Malkovich in a breath-taking poker duel. You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat throughout the movie.

4. The Sting (1973)

What list about top gambling movies, or any movies in general, would be complete without the appearance of The Sting? Paul Newman and Robert Redford take us through a film filled with horse racing, poker, betting and high-stakes scheming. Gather a group of your film-loving friends and spend a rainy Friday night with this movie; you’ll not be disappointed.

5. High Roller (2003)

If you’ve ever wondered how gambling and drug addiction can ruin a man, this is the movie to see. Michael Imperioli, of The Sopranos, stars as Stu Ungar, a real-life, legendary poker player. Ungar was an amazing card player, who’s winnings totaled millions. Whether it was gin rummy, blackjack or poker, Ungar seemed to have perfected the skill of gambling. Ultimately, drugs and gambling addictions won out, causing Ungar to lose everything and, in the end, even his life.

If you’ve got a few free hours this weekend, spend them watching any one, or all, of these top gambling movies. Your weekend is sure to be full of excitement, cheering and even nail-biting. You may even just find that you’re addicted to a new genre!
