Creating quick and easy smoothies is one way that more and more people have discovered as a way to maintain a healthy diet. ‘Drinking your veggies’ has become a popular trend as a way to consume natural vitamins and minerals as well as providing lots of energy to get through a day. Whether people are making protein drinks as a way to diet or just making a green smoothie to feel more green, finding the right blender to make up their daily treat can become a tiresome task. This article will review the best single serve blenders to make create quick and easy smoothies.
Single serve blenders have been created as a way for people looking to make a single portion smoothie easier and more convenient. Often times these machines will blend up all the ingredients in a to-go container, and mess is greatly reduced. Similar to other small kitchen appliances, like spice grinders, a single serve blender’s motor and base is smaller and more lightweight and takes up a lot less space on the counter-top or in storage. Many of these machines have been designed for travel, so making a smoothie on the go becomes a better option than eating out while on a business trip or vacation.
In this article, I have put together some of the best reviewed blenders on the market. I have included in my review the power of the motor, the quality of the blades, the accessories that come with the blender as well as the price. As a general rule, the more powerful and well designed the machine the higher the price. However, many people have found that a cheaper and less powerful blender can work just as well depending on their needs.

Will drinking smoothies help with weight loss?
While there is quite a bit of debate over this topic, it is generally agreed on that adding fruits and veggies to your diet is one way to maintain a healthy and nutritious diet. According to Pew Research the majority of Americans are reporting that they are eating more junk food than they should for the sake of convenience.
According to the CDC, “Fruits and vegetables are part of a well-balanced and healthy eating plan. There are many different ways to lose or maintain a healthy weight. Using more fruits and vegetables along with whole grains and lean meats, nuts, and beans is a safe and healthy one.“
There are many other great health benefits to consuming more fruits and veggies as well. Including reducing risks of cancer and adding important vitamins and minerals to your diet.
One good reason to blend fruits and veggies into smoothies rather than juicing them is that you are keeping all the fiber from your fruits and veggies in the smoothie. Fiber is a great way to help you feel full, plus you keep all the nutrients from the skin and pulp in your drink.
It is important to remember that smoothies can also be high in sugar, so if you are going to use smoothies as part of a weight management plan, watch the calories and sugar (including the sugar from fruits) that you are adding to your drinks.
Top Ten Single Serve Blenders
Nutri NINJA BL455 Personal Blender Review
If you in the market for a single serve blender, you have probably already heard of Nutri Ninja blenders. Their line of blenders are all well made and powerful so any of their models would be more than adequate for most people. Nutri Ninja has a line of blenders to choose from, however, the BL455 seems to stand out from the pack if you are looking for a great personal blender.
Motor and Blades:
The motor on this machine is 1000 watts, which is much higher than the wattage on most other single serve blenders. The earlier models of the Nutri Ninja had a very powerful 900 watts, while the BL455 takes it up a notch with an extra 100 watts of power. The strong motor and the Pro Extractor blades can shred, chop, grind or blend ingredients with ease. It also is easily able to crush ice.The tough blades can cut through skin, seeds and stems to get the most nutrients from your ingredients.Whether you are looking to whip up a small batch of hummus or making a daily smoothie, this machine can handle the task.
The jars that come with this machine are 24 oz., 18 oz. and 12 oz. They all have travel lids as well, so you can take your smoothie to go. Now the size of the jars will limit you on the quantity of things that can you blend up, but just keep in mind that this is a single serve machine and not designed as a large food processor. Maximum fill lines are provided on the jars, and it is important to not overfill them. If they are overfilled it is likely that there will be messy leakage from the jars.
To use this machine you simply attach a bladed lid to the top of the jar, then blend. Blending is done by placing the jar, lid side down, into the base of the machine, lining up the tabs, and turning it to lock it in place. Once it is locked in placed the motor is activated by pushing down on the jar. There are no speed options, or on/off buttons, and you do have to continuously hold the jar down to keep the motor running. The blades are very strong and blend ingredients well with a good consistency and even distribution. Once you are done, you can swap out the blade top with a standard lid, and you are ready to go.
The price of the Nutri Ninja is very reasonable, and can usually be found for under $100. While it possible to find single serve blenders at a much lower price, the NutriNinja can generally outperform the less expensive brands. Considering that is almost powerful enough to compete with some of the top of line blending machines, this is a very good value.
Check out the video below to see Nutri-Ninja in action.
The NutriBullet is made by the same manufacturer as the well known Magic Bullet. Along with the Magic Bullet, it consistently remains one of the bestselling personal blenders on Amazon. The powerful motor, ease of use and cleanup, and compact size keep this blender popular.
Many years ago when I first started looking into purchasing a single serve blender, everyone I knew that used one told me to get a Magic Bullet. It was perfect for blending up quick smoothies. What I really enjoyed using it for was whipping up small batches of pureed baby food. Even as the babies grew out of the pureed food stage, I always found many uses for my MagicBullet. When the NutriBullet was introduced, it didn’t take a lot of convincing to get me to try it. I had been pleased with the performance of the Magic Bullet, and was interested to see what the NutriBullet could do. And I was impressed. Now that I have upgraded, the NutriBullet remains my personal go-to blender when I need to make a quick smoothie or when I have any other small blending job.
Motor and Blades:
The NutriBullet stepped up the performance by giving this blender a 600 watt motor, making it more powerful than the Magic Bullet. This strong motor makes this blender a great emulsifier. This motor is able to chop frozen fruit and ice and it does it better than it’s predecessor. The drinks are smoother and seem to have a better overall consistency. The NutriBiullet company claims their machine is powerful enough to cut through stems and seeds to get you the most nutrition possible from your food.
The NutriBullet comes with 2 short cups and 1 tall cup, and 2 lids. The travel lids seal to prevent any spills, and keep the contents fresh. The 2 short cups will hold 14 oz., while the tall cup can hold about 24 oz.
With this machine you also get two different blades. The emulsifier blades to make smoothies, and a flat, milling blade to grind things from coffee beans to seeds or other dry ingredients.
Blending up your ingredients in this machine is fairly straightforward and easy to do. First, simply add your ingredients to the jar, being sure to not fill past the fill line. Next, attach the bladed lid to the jar, securing tightly. Then you attach the jar to the base by turning the cup upside down and aligning the lid to the base of the blender and locking it into place by twisting it. From there you can then turn on the motor by pushing down on the jar. The blender will continue to run until you release pressure from the jar. Once you have completed blending your ingredients, unlock the jar by twisting it and turn it over with the lid up. You can then removing the bladed lid and your smoothie is ready to consume.
The small size makes this blender great for storage, or even to leave out on the counter. It is unobtrusive and fairly lightweight at about 7 pounds.
Blenders such as the NutriBullet are good for a lot of different tasks, however the motor should not be made to run for more than a minute. More complicated recipes and ingredients that need to blend for several minutes would be better prepared on more durable blender or food processor.
One of the common complaints that comes up about the NutriBullet is that it may leak when in use. It is important to note that overfilling the jars may be the problem in some of these cases. Keeping the ingredients below the fill line and ensuring the lid is firmly secured may help to prevent leaking.
Clean up for the NutriBullet is good as well. The jars are widemouthed and easy to clean.
NutriBullet runs at a bit of higher price than the MagicBullet or some of the other options in personal size blenders. However the motor is strong and powerful and it is also important to keep in mind the size of jars and number of accessories the blenders come with. For what this machine is capable of, the price is reasonable.

This affordable and sleekly designed single serve blender is perfect for anyone who is looking for a simple machine for occasional simple blending tasks. At a bargain price combined with good performance and good quality parts, this Hamilton Beach blender is a great option.

The motor on this machine is 175 watts. This is powerful enough to blend, and make many of the most popular smoothie, soup or dip recipes. Magic Bullet Review
The Magic Bullet has been around for quite awhile now and is well known in the market for single server blenders. Its introduction transformed the world of personal blenders. Its small design, and ability to make multiple recipes from dips, baby food purees, hummus, smoothies, milkshakes or even grinding coffee, has made and kept the Magic Bullet a popular choice in blenders.
As I mentioned in the NutriBullet review, I used the Magic Bullet for years, for multiple reasons. It was the machine that was most recommended to me for whipping up homemade baby foods, and I found it useful over the years for many more things as well. Priced somewhere in between the cheapest and more expensive machines, the Magic Bullet’s price is still very affordable.
Motor and Blades:
The motor is 250 watts, which is powerful enough to get the blending jobs done. Blended soft ingredients should end up with a even and smooth consistency.
You will get one mug, one short cup and one tall cup with this blender. It also comes with two solid lids, and one flip top lid. They have also provided a 10 second recipe book for some more great ideas of things to make with your new machine.
Much like the NutriBullet, the Magic Bullet is used by filling the blending jar with your ingredients, screwing on the bladed lid and turning the jar over to fit into the motor base. Applying pressure to the top of the jar will turn the motor on, and you simply blend your ingredients until you are done. Release the pressure on the jar to stop the motor.
The price of the Magic Bullet comes in well below the cost of more powerful blenders like the NutriBullet and the NutriNinja. It is affordable and a good starting place for people who are looking into purchasing their first personal size blender.

However the open spout is also large enough to insert a sturdy straw, so you can just plop one in and you are ready to go.
The chopper blades and cup are great accessories to have if you prefer to freshly grind up things like flax seeds or nuts to put in your recipes.

Oster My Blend Review
Another budget friendly option in single serve blenders is the Oster My Blend. This very affordable blender is powerful enough to blend up daily smoothies, making it easy to keep a healthy diet. The large sports jar that comes with this blender makes a great single serve portion size that you can take with you as you head out the door in the mornings. A variety of color options enables you to personalize your blender.
250 watts of blending power make this a decently powered blender. The smoothies come out well blended, with a decent consistency. Ice is processed well however occasionally some fruit pieces do not get thoroughly processed or may need to be reprocessed.
A single 20 jar/sports bottle comes with this blender. The travel is spill proof and great for taking your smoothie to go. The jar is made with BPA free materials.
Its easy to quickly make a smoothie to go in this blender. Simply place your ingredients in the travel jar, attach the bladed lid and turn the jar over to attach to the motor base. To stop blending you either release the pressure on the jar or unlock from the base. Most smoothies will be finished blending in under 45 secs depending on the amount and size of the ingredients.
The low price on this blender makes it very attractive to anyone on a budget that still would like a way to make healthy quick smoothies.

The Black+Decker single serve blender is another solid performer when it comes to budget friendly personal blenders. Making protein shakes or smoothies is simple and easy to do with this blender. Blending right into the to-go cup helps keep clean up quick. A few different color options are available as well.

Oster MyBlend Pro Series Personal Blender Review
The Oster MyBlend PRo is a step up from its closely related product, the Oster MyBlend. Please see my previous review of that blender to compare. The motor on this machine has been made more powerful and can be used to make more complex smoothies. This machine is not much more expensive than the MyBlend, and depending on what you are looking for may be worth the cost. If you are just looking for a simple machine to take easy smoothies to go, stick with the less expensive MyBlend. However is you are looking to step it up with more ingredients, or want a smoother consistency, the Pro series will offer more power.
Motor and Blades:
The 350 watt motor on the Pro series is step up from the Oster My Blend. This machine is only a few dollars more than the My Blend, but is probably worth the extra expense. You get a more powerful motor that will better be able to crush ice and blend fruits and vegetables.
The blender comes with a 20 oz travel jar. The travel lid has a snap closure as well as a clip that could be attached to a backpack. This is very portable sip and go style of travel jar.
Like other blenders in this price range, the blender is used by filling the blending jar to the fill line. Filling the jar past the fill line may result in leaking and/or a poor consistency. Typically going below the fill line produces best results. After placing the ingredients in the jar, attach the bladed lid firmly and turn the jar over to attach to the base. Push to engage the motor, or twist and lock the jar in place and the motor will start. To end blending either release pressure on the jar or unlock from base. From there you can remove the bladed top, and replace with the travel lid. You and your smoothie are now all set to go!
Finally, this machine is very easy to clean and the parts are dishwasher safe as well.
A low priced machine that is slightly more expensive than the lowest priced personal blenders. It is affordable and gives a little extra power.
Vitamix S30 Personal Blender
The Vitamix S30 Personal Blender should probably be at the top of my list when it comes to quality and consistency. A powerful machine with an fantastic reputation, the Vitamix S30 is an excellent buy. However the price tag on this machine is fairly high, and often a deterrent for most people when purchasing a single serve blender. My personal opinion is that if you are serious about your blenders and have the money to invest in a machine of this caliber, then you will not go wrong. However I also feel that you can get an excellent quality smoothie or blended drink from a lower priced good quality machine like the NutriNinja or Nutribullet, if your budget for a blender is a bit lower.
This very versatile machine is capable of making a wide range of reicpes. It is a blender, a food processer, a food chopper, mixer, food grinder, and more. Still with all that this blender offers you can also make single serve smoothies. This is a great choice for someone who is looking for a machine that can do more than other single serve blenders available. It is probably the only single serve blending machine on the market that also has this level of versatility, high quality design and performance.
The 790 watt motor is very powerful and this blender makes a fantastice emulsifier. It can blend up seeds, skins, ice and more as well as give a very consistent and smooth beverage. It also is very fast. Making a single serve smoothie has never been quicker.
With this machine you will get two size blending containers: one 40 oz. jar and one 20 oz. jar. It also comes with one portable, sip and go, travel lid. A full color cookbook also comes with this unit.
The 20 oz. portable container is very convienet and makes a great and easy way to take a smoothie to go. The travel lid has been well constructed and designed.
You can either use the 40 oz blending container to make a larger quantity recipe or attach the blades to the portable 20 oz. blending jar to make a single serve portion to go. Add ingredients to the blending jar of your choice in the order that is stated in the instruction manual. This will produce the best and most consistent drinks. Also be sure that you have added the proper amount of liquid to your recipe to ensure the blender is able to properly run.
This machine has variable speed controls (from 1-10) as well as pulse option. The power options are a great plus on this machine in comparison to other single serve blenders. Often times other machines are push or twist to power on and only have one power mode.
Also this machine is easy to clean. However you should wash immediately after each use to prevent food from drying out on the blades, this will help to keep the machine in good condition.
Another thing to consider before purchasing this machine is that the company offers a 5-year full warranty as well as a 30 day guarantee.
While the S30 is not as powerful or versatile as some of the other Vitamix blenders, it is still an attractive option in personal blending machines. You get a company with excellent customer service, a warranty and powerful brand name.
This is a high priced and high caliber blender. It is versatile as well as powerful, and worth the high price tag. If you are looking for a machine that can outperform other single serve blenders, this may be the way to go.
Single Serve Blender Buyer’s Guide
Blenders consist of a motor, blades, housing and food jar or container. When comparing single serve blenders it is most important to consider the motor power and blade quality of the different machines. It is also very important to keep in mind what purposes you have for using the blender. Clearly the types of foods and the amount of use you expect to get out of the single serve blender will be important factors. The investment of a single serve blender can take a bit of consideration.
The power of the motor on most machines is in direct correlation with the price of the machine. How powerful the machine is will tell you what types of ingredients can be blended well. Taking this into consideration, the power of the motor is probably the best gauge to see what machine will best suit your needs.
A basic blender will have approximately 175-250 watts. At this power you can expect to easily be able to blend and pulverize soft foods like bananas, avocado, yogurt, protein and other powders, etc. Other soft, non frozen fruits, veggies and foods like blueberries, strawberries, or kale should blend well, if not perfectly, on this power as well.
A mid-grade blender will have some additional power with a motor that ranges from 275-600 watts. The more powerful the motor, the more emulsifying power you can expect the machine to have. If you are looking for a blender than can handle some more heavy duty items, like crushing frozen fruits or ice, but don’t want to shell out the dollars for a high wattage machine, a blender in this category could work very well for you.
A high grade blender will have a motor 600 watts plus. A machine with 900 watts plus will easily be pulverizing seeds, nuts, fruit skins (like orange peels) and even stems. Machines in this category often brag about getting the most nutrients out of your ingredients, as the pulverize them to drinkable consistencies.
No matter the motor you end up purchasing, care should be taken to keep the blender in the best condition. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions in use and care. Lastly, some blenders should not be run for long time periods in order to keep them from burning out.
Combined with the motor the blades are the powerhouse of the blender. Ensuring you are purchasing a machine with high quality blades is essential in your satisfaction with your blender. One of the things you should look for in the blades are that they thick enough to not bend or break over time. A poorly designed blade may bend with usage over time, effectively making your blender useless. Another consideration is to check if the blades have been made with stainless steel. The stainless steel blades will be more durable and stronger.
To properly blend, the blades should also be of various asymmetrical angles, this will help pulverize and emulsify your ingredients properly. Most blenders will have three to four blades.
What accessories come with the blender, may help you decide which blender is right for you. Do you wants lots of extra cups and lids? Do you want to be able to chose different blades for grinding and blending? Or do you prefer to only have one cup to avoid the hassle of having to store lots of extra jars and lids?
Another consideration to is the quality of the jars and lids. Check to see if the jars have been made with BPA- free materials. Some machines have travel lids, some are spill proof and still other have no lids.
Finally, the size of the cups may be important to you as well. These machines have jars that range in size from 8 oz. to 20 oz.
The investment of a blender may having varying levels of importance to you. Again the power of the motor is going to directly influence the cost of the machine. However, if you really are serious about investing into a blender, you may have pay up for a quality machine. Many of the cheaper machines may work great for you, if you are keeping it simple or only getting occasional use from it. The biggest complaint from the cheapest machines is that they burn out quickly. So if you are planning on using a blender for long term, you may want to consider upgrading to a more expensive and longer lasting blender.
The Final Say
Purchasing a single serve blender can become a lot easier once you have decided your needs and understand how the blender can be expected to perform. Remember to check for quality of materials and user reviews before making a purchase. A high quality machine should be able to last years.
