Benefits of Grinding Your Own Spices

Grinding your own spices will add a much more robust and potent flavor to your dishes.

Another benefit of grinding your own spices, is the peace of knowing exactly what is in your spices. When you purchase your spices  already ground, other ingredients like salt, preservatives, or additional spices, may have been added to the mix. In addition to that a certain low level of ‘defects’ or foreign matter that are allowed by regulations could be in your spices. These could include dead insects, mold, excrement (yikes!), rat hairs, threads, etc. Who wants any of that if it can be avoided?

Having a spice grinder takes up little space and storage and many models are attractive enough to leave out on the counter top. Like other kitchen gadgets, such as small personal size blenders, a spice grinder is a functional  investment. Not convinced yet?  Just try grinding up some of the more aromatic spices, like cinnamon or cloves, and be amazed at the way your home will smell. Nothing beats the warm inviting aromas of freshly ground spices.

Grinding your spices is easier and simpler than you think and can involve very little time, hassle or mess. Your food (and family) will thank you for it. So if you thinking about giving it a try read on to find the best spice grinder that will meet your needs. 🙂

Spice Grinder Buyer’s Guide

What exactly should you be looking for when purchasing a spice grinder? There are a lot of different things to consider. Do you want a manual or electric grinder? How much of the spice will you be grinding up at once? Capacity on grinders will vary. Is price a consideration for you?

What kind of Spice Grinder should you buy?

There are different kinds of grinders depending on your needs and what spices you want to grind.

  • A traditional Mortar and Pestle may be exactly what you need if you are looking to grind up very small quantities and don’t mind doing it by hand. Many spices can be ground in this way, and it is a simple method with easy cleanup. Jamie Oliver’s unpolished granite Mortar and Pestle is my favorite.
  • An electric blade grinder can be used to grind your spices as well. The majority of spice grinders on our top ten list make up this category. This type of grinder is interchangeable with coffee grinders, however, is highly recommended that you do not use the same grinder for spices and coffee. The spices will alter the flavor of your coffee beans, so unless you enjoy coffee with a spicy kick it’s best to just keep things separate. If you have a particular grinder you like and would like to use for both things, your best option is to get two of the same grinders in different colors or just label them.
  • Another way spices can be effectively ground or grated is with a microplane. Besides cheeses or lemon zests, these types of graters are also good for ginger or cinnamon. Check out this version on Amazon.
  • Burr grinders are another popular option in grinders. Many people prefer burr grinders for coffee beans because they believe they will give a more even consistency to the grind as well as a better brew. Burr grinders can be used to grind spices as well. This article, however, will be focusing mainly on blade grinders.

How Long Will Spices Last?

Electric grinders are great if you plan to make larger quantities of spices up at one time. As a general rule of thumb  whole spices can be stored for up to one year, and ground spices can last for approximately 6 months.

Spices that have been bought at the store can go stale very quickly. Furthermore, if they are not stored correctly their potency and flavor dissipates even quicker. Electric grinders are great if you plan to make larger quantities of spices up at one time.  When you buy whole spices and store them correctly they can last a lot longer. As a general rule of thumb whole spices can be stored for up to one year, and ground spices can last approximately 6 months.

Grinding Your Own Spices

Spices can be made of bark (cinnamon), buds (cloves), roots (ginger), or seeds (nutmeg). Also, most spices can be found in whole form with few exceptions (like Paprika). Look for good quality sources to find the best spices in your area. You can find sellers online as well, if you must.

You can either grind up the spices in large batches and store them in a tin, or make up just what you need at one time. The fresher ground the spice, the more flavorful and aromatic it will be. Store the spices in a place that is away from light, heat and humidity to keep it as fresh as possible.

Tips for Grinding Spices

If you have never ground your own spices before, you may benefit from a few tips and tricks.  Even a seasoned pro (see what I did there?), may pick up an idea.

Consider Toasting your Spices

Toasting spices before grinding them can be very beneficial. This method releases the powerful oils and will add a punch to both the aroma and the flavor of the dish they are added to.  It helps to bring out the flavors of the spice as well as giving a more thorough grind.

While not a spice, flax seed is another ingredient that does well if you toast it before grinding. Similarly, many spices will simply break up easier after toasting.

Furthermore, toasting the spices is as easy as putting them in a pan on medium heat and cooking for a few minutes. You can tell when your spices are done when you are able to smell their aromas. The most important part of “frying” your spices is to make sure they do not burn or even brown. Allow the spices to cool before using in the grinder.

Spices to Keep for Grinding

Keeping some whole spices on hand is convenient and will ensure the freshest ans most flavorful dishes.

The list of spices that can be kept on hand to be freshly ground can be quite extensive, however the following list contains some common suggestions.

  • Cardamon– (black or green) A strong spice with a lot or flavor and aroma.  Cardamon is commonly used in Indian and Middle Eastern recipes.
  • Allspice- A versatile spice that can be used in both savory and sweet recipes. While it is is in the pimento family, allspice is similar to nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves.
  • Cloves- Cloves have a distinctive and warm aroma. Known for having health benefits, cloves can be added to a large variety of recipes from pumpkin bread to soups.
  • Cinnamon- Cinnamon is a well known and delicious spice that also has a wonderful and warm aroma.
  • Celery Seed- A spice with a very strong taste, it is popular in pickling and chutneys, as well as many other recipes.
  • Cumin- This spice is widely used throughout the world. Cumin is a common spice used in Mexican, Vietnamese, and Indian dishes.
  • Mustard seed- When this very small seed is ground and mixed with vinegar or other ingredients it creates the well known condiment, mustard.
  • White Poppy- Similar to the the brown poppy, white poppy seeds have a nutty flavor and distinctive crunch.
  • Fennel Seed- Similar in both taste and appearance to anise seeds, fennel seeds can be used in  both savory and sweet dishes.
  • Nutmeg-This spice is well known for its flavor and warm, inviting aroma.
  • Peppercorns-Available in a variety of colors and tastes the peppercorn is one of the most commonly ground spices.
  • Star Anise- A staple of many traditional Chinese dishes. Star Anise is distinctively shaped like a star.

Storing Freshly Ground Spices

If you have ground up extra spices and want to store them for a short while, how do you ensure they will retain the maximum potency and freshness? Storing your spices correctly is key to keeping them fresh.

One of the reasons people prefer to grind their spices themselves instead of buying them from the supermarket is because the spices in the supermarket have more than likely been exposed to sunlight at some point. The same thing should be kept in mind when storing spices in your kitchen. Do not keep them in a place where there is any sun coming in. Spice racks that sit out on the counter are a prime example of this. Another preference of some people is to keep their spices in amber jars to ensure that spices are exposed to as little sunlight as possible.

Another thing to keep in mind is temperature. Spices will do best at about 70 degrees. So nix the idea of keeping them above stove, or near other appliances.

Lastly, spices need to be kept dry. If freshly ground spices are stored anywhere that condensation could build up they could become ruined. For this reason, storage in fridges or freezers is a bad idea.

Do keep your freshly ground spices in a cool, dry place with limited to no sunlight for the freshest and most potent results.

What to Look For in a Spice Grinder

  • Design- Do you want an electric or manual grinder? Knowing what your needs are will go a long way ion deciding which version you want. Small amounts of spices can be easily ground up in a small grinder. You should even consider a trying mortar and pestle style of grinder. Larger amounts of spices will be better suited for an electric grinder. Electric grinders make this chore a lot easier.
  • Blades- Look for an electric grinder with strong and durable blades. Stainless steel will be a good quality to look for.
  • Motor- Motor watts will vary anywhere from 100-250 watts for a grinder. Obviously the stronger the motor the better and finer the machine should grind.
  • Capacity- Don’t forget to check the capacity of the grinder to make sure it meets your needs.
  • Material- Some grinders are made of better quality materials than others. Some will have BPA-free plastic, so be sure to check for that if it is important to you.
  • Warranties- Different brands will offer varying lengths on their warranties, or they may not offer one at all.

Cleaning Your Electric Spice Grinder

Keeping your electric spice grinder clean will help reduce mixing ingredients and crossover of aromas or flavors. Depending on the model that you own there are various methods to removing leftover spices as well as their oils and aromas from your grinder.

  • You may be able to simply wipe out the grinder with a dry/absorbent cloth. It is recommended that you do this after each grinding.
  • A pastry brush may be used as well to wipe any remaining spice that is leftover in the grinding cup or between the blades.
  • Another method which gives a bit better of a clean is to grind some rock salt up to help remove any stubborn ingredients. Completely wipe out the grinder after.
  • To give your grinder a deep clean, take a couple teaspoons of white rice and grind them in your grinder. The white rice should help remove leftover spices as well as has the added benefit of absorbing leftover oils from spices.
  • You can also try to break up a piece of stale bread and run it through the grinder. The bread should be absorbent enough to eliminate a lot of odors and pick stray grains of spice or coffee.

The Final Say

Once you know what you will be using your spice grinder for it should be pretty straightforward to decide which spice grinder will work for you. Perhaps having one with removable and extra cups is a priority. Conversly, maybe you would rather not have a machine with extra pieces that need to be stored. Also look for additional features such as a warranty. Your home will soon be filled with the wonderful aroma of freshly ground spices. Once you get the hang of grinding up your own spices, you should be very happy with the results!
